The Guard Family Team Building (GFTB) Program is a global educational program whose primary objective is to improve the readiness by teaching and promoting personal and family readiness through standardized, progressive, and sequential education of family members. It is directed by AR 608-48 (October 2003) and directs The Chief, National Guard Bureau to ensure AFTB is an integral and viable part of the NGB Family Program. National Guard Bureau, Family Programs (NGB-FP) has extended AFTB to include the Army and Air National Guard and draft regulation NGR 600–12/ANGR 211–1 further outlines the role of GFTB within the Army and Air National Guard communities.

GFTB plays an integral part in the family programs of the National Guard. The GFTB mission is to educate and empower members of the National Guard community to develop skills and encourage behaviors that strengthen self-reliance, promote retention, and enhance readiness. The basic philosophy of GFTB is the belief that individuals can function at a high level in any situation with minimal outside support when they have been appropriately trained.

GFTB is administered by NGB-FP through State Family Program Directors (SFPDs), unit and wing commanders, MPSC contracted GFAP/GFTB Program Specialists, and a MPSC contracted GFAP/GFTB Program Manager.
